When you are ready to choose carpet, understanding the basics about carpet construction can help you make the right choice for your lifestyle and budget.
There are basically three construction types of carpet - loop pile, cut pile, or a combination of the two - cut and loop pile. Todays carpets use these methods in various ways to acheive a wide variety of textures and patterns.
Berber is loop pile carpet. Berber carpets are very durable and hide dirt well making them ideal for casual and active settings like family rooms. Berbers come in many colors, patterns and styles, making this a great all-pupose, long lasting carpet.
Frieze is cut pile carpet. Frieze pile has a high twist causing it to curl over at the end. This treatment creates a textured surface of high durability that hides footprints well. Friezes come in a variety of textures and colors and are good performers in high traffic areas and can go anywhere in the home.
Plush is cut pile carpet. Also referred to as Velvet. The pile is cut to an even height making the pile perfectly flat. This gives the carpet a dense luxurious feel. Plush carpets will show footprints and vacuum marks. Plush carpets are best for low traffic areas and formal rooms.
Saxony is cut pile carpet. Saxony is similar to a plush but the pile has a slight twist giving it a subtle textured appearance. Saxony will show footprints and vacuum marks and is a good choice for low traffic and formal areas.
Textured is cut pile carpet. Textured carpet pile has alternating twists creating a two-tone appearance. This textured appearance does a good job of hiding footprints and vacuum marks. Textured carpet creates a casual atmosphere is works well in all areas of the home.
